Rules and Regulations

The Edinburgh Royal Navy Club was instituted on the 14 th March 1821 as a Dining Club in Edinburgh for Officers of the Royal Navy, above the rank of Lieutenant, on the active and retired lists.

Officers wishing to join should live or have lived in Scotland or be serving or have served in or from bases in Scotland. At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 2nd February 1883 it was unanimously agreed that in future Lieutenants of the Royal Navy should be eligible to become Members of the Club.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 10 th November 1972 it was agreed that in future all Officers on the General List could be admitted.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 13 th November 1980 it was agreed that in future Chaplains, Doctors, Dentists and Royal Marines who hold Permanent Commissions could be admitted.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 14 th November 1996 it was agreed that in future all Officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines could be admitted.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 13 th November 2014 it was agreed that in future all Officers of the former Women’s Royal Naval Service and those of the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service could be admitted.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 9 th November 2017 it was agreed that, in future, Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve could be admitted.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held on 8 th November 2018 it was agreed that, in future, Members may bring spouses or partners to annual dinners should space be available.

RULES

 

I

The Annual Naval Club Dinner will be held on the second Thursday in November at any place the Committee of the Club may appoint.

II

The Dinner to be on the table at 7.45. The Annual General Meeting will be held before the Dinner at 7.15, when any candidate may be proposed, seconded and duly elected.

III

The Annual Subscription to be £10. Each Member present at dinner to pay such sum as the Committee shall from time to time decide and a like sum if he brings a friend.

IV

The Chairman and Honorary Secretary may bring a guest free of charge.

V

The Admiral Commanding the Coast of Scotland be invited as a guest at the Annual Dinner of the Club.

VI

That it be the privilege of the Chairman to nominate who shall occupy the chair at the next dinner. If the nominee is absent, the chair will be offered to the Senior Member present.

VII

That the Funds of the Club shall stand in the names of the Chairman of the Committee and the Honorary Secretary/Treasurer for the time being.
